Asian BBQ Beef Stir Fry

BBQ beef recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 34 green onions, sliced diagonally (whites and greens separated)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • Steamed rice or noodles, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place beef in the freezer for 15 minutes to firm up, then slice thinly against the grain.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, garlic, and ginger to form the marinade.
  3. Add beef to the marinade, toss to coat thoroughly, and let sit for 15 minutes (or up to 2 hours refrigerated).
  4. Prepare all vegetables while beef marinates.
  5. Heat a large wok or skillet over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil and when hot, add half the beef in a single layer.
  6. Let beef sear for 30-45 seconds, then stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until browned but still slightly pink inside. Remove to a plate.
  7. Repeat with remaining beef, adding more oil if needed.
  8. In the same pan, add remaining oil if needed. Add white parts of green onions and stir for 10 seconds.
  9. Add bell pepper and broccoli; stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until crisp-tender and bright in color.
  10. Return beef to the pan along with any accumulated juices and reserved marinade.
  11. Toss everything together and cook for another 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens slightly and coats everything.
  12. Remove from heat, drizzle with sesame oil if using, and sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onion tops.
  13. Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra tender beef, slice as thinly as possible against the grain.
  • Make sure your wok or pan is very hot before adding the beef to get a good sear without overcooking.
  • For a thicker sauce, mix 1 teaspoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water and add during the final minute of cooking.
  • This recipe works well with chicken, pork, or tofu as protein alternatives.
