Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ½ cups brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup caramel sauce
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon flaky sea salt for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9-inch square pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan, spreading evenly to the corners.
  7. Drizzle room temperature caramel sauce over the top of the batter.
  8. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the caramel throughout the batter, creating a marbled effect.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  10. Allow brownies to cool completely in the pan before lifting out using the parchment paper handles.
  11. Cut into squares and serve. For cleaner cuts, refrigerate for 30 minutes before slicing.
