Homemade Flour Tortillas

Soft, pliable homemade flour tortillas that taste far better than store-bought versions, using just four simple ingredients.

  • 2 cups (260g) all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
    1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2/3 cup (160ml) very warm water
  • 5 tablespoons light flavored oil, melted shortening, melted lard or melted butter

Instructions

  1. Dissolve salt in warm water by stirring until completely dissolved.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and oil with a fork until mixture is crumbly.
  3. Add most of the salty water and stir until shaggy dough forms, adding remaining water if needed.
  4. Gently knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 2–3 minutes until it becomes smooth.
  5. Cover with clean cloth and rest for 15 minutes to 2 hours.
  6. Divide dough into 10 equal portions and shape into disks.
  7. Roll each disk into thin 8-inch rounds.
  8. Heat heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
  9. Cook each tortilla for 20-30 seconds until bubbles form, then flip and cook other side until browned (1-2 minutes total).
  10. Transfer to cloth-covered stack and keep covered while cooking remaining tortillas.

Notes

For best results, allow dough to rest at least 30 minutes before rolling.
