Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 large apples (about 12 cups once they’re cored and sliced into thin wedges)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ¾ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • Apple juice or water as needed

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice apples into thin wedges, then cut those wedges in half or thirds.
  2. Melt butter and brown sugar in a large skillet over medium heat until well combined.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low, add apple slices, and toss to coat with the sugar mixture.
  4. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, then stir to redistribute apples.
  5. Sprinkle all seasonings over apples and stir to combine.
  6. Simmer for 20-30 minutes on medium-low heat, stirring every 4-6 minutes.
  7. Mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry, then add to the pan and stir to thicken the sauce.
  8. Continue cooking until apples reach your desired softness (about 5-10 more minutes).
  9. If sauce becomes too thick, thin with apple juice or water to your preferred consistency.
  10. Serve warm as a side dish, dessert topping, or breakfast accompaniment.
