Juicy hamburger steaks smothered in rich, savory onion gravy – the ultimate comfort food made simple.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • pounds ground beef (85% lean)
  • ¼ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • ½ cup chicken broth (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and form into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove to a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook for 8-10 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Gradually add beef broth (and chicken broth if using), stirring continuously. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  6. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  7. Return patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes until cooked through.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

For extra tender patties, avoid overmixing the meat. To test gravy thickness, coat the back of a spoon – it should leave a clear path when you run your finger through it. Nutrition facts are estimates and may vary based on ingredients used, portion sizes, and preparation methods.
