Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional Flavor Enhancers:
  • 1/2 medium bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 stalk celery, finely diced
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Optional Toppings:
  • Sliced cheddar cheese
  • Dill pickle slices
  • Sliced red onion
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Sliced tomatoes

Instructions

  1. Set the Instant Pot to ‘Sauté’ and wait until display reads ‘Hot’.
  2. Add ground beef to pot, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
  3. When beef begins to brown (about 2 minutes), add diced onion and minced garlic.
  4. Continue cooking 3-4 minutes until beef is no longer pink and onions are translucent.
  5. Carefully drain excess fat from the pot if needed.
  6. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and any optional flavor enhancers. Stir to combine.
  7. Close and lock the Instant Pot lid, ensuring valve is set to ‘Sealing’.
  8. Select ‘Pressure Cook’ or ‘Manual’ on high pressure for 5 minutes.
  9. When cooking cycle completes, perform a quick pressure release.
  10. Once pressure is fully released, open lid and stir mixture thoroughly.
  11. If sauce seems too thin, select ‘Sauté’ again and simmer 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  12. Optionally, toast hamburger buns by lightly buttering inside surfaces and heating in a skillet.
  13. Spoon sloppy joe mixture onto bottom buns, add desired toppings, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For best flavor, use ground beef with 80/20 fat content. Leaner beef works but may be slightly less juicy.
  • The mixture freezes beautifully for up to 3 months in airtight containers.
  • For a make-ahead meal, prepare the filling up to 3 days in advance and refrigerate.
