Caramelized Onion Dip

  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions and stir to coat with butter.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook onions for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn deep golden brown.
  4. Stir in brown sugar and continue cooking for 2 minutes until fully caramelized.
  5. Transfer the onion mixture to a bowl and let cool for 15 minutes.
  6. In a medium bowl, mix softened cream cheese, sour cream, and chopped chives until smooth.
  7. Fold in the cooled caramelized onions, mixing gently to maintain texture.
  8. Season with salt, pepper, and optional Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder to taste.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (2 hours preferred) to allow flavors to meld.
  10. Remove from refrigerator 15 minutes before serving for best flavor.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, caramelize the onions longer at a lower temperature.
