Why Instant Pot Chicken and Rice Is a Must-Try Combo

The Popularity of Instant Pot Meals in Busy Kitchens

These days, Instant Pot chicken and rice has become a go-to meal for home cooks across the U.S.—and for good reason. First of all, it’s quick. Second, it’s convenient. And most importantly, it’s delicious.

The Instant Pot has completely changed how we cook meals at home. With the push of a button, you can create complex flavors without standing over a stove. In fact, one of the main reasons this chicken and rice dish is so loved is because it delivers maximum flavor with minimum effort.

Moreover, it’s a one-pot solution. This results in less cleanup and saves valuable time during busy evenings. Instead of using separate pans for meat, rice, and veggies, everything cooks together in harmony. This method allows the flavors to develop deeply, especially when fresh cilantro, onion, and garlic are used.

Another advantage? The flexibility. You can use what you already have—white or brown rice, chicken breast or thighs, and whatever vegetables are in your fridge. Not only does this reduce waste, but it also keeps meal planning stress-free.

Because of its ease and versatility, this meal is a favorite among parents, professionals, and students alike. It suits every lifestyle—and delivers on taste every time.

Health and Nutritional Benefits of Chicken and Rice

Beyond convenience, Instant Pot chicken and rice is packed with nutrients. It’s one of the easiest ways to get a well-balanced meal in one bowl. To begin with, chicken offers a high-quality source of lean protein that supports a healthy diet. It supports muscle repair, helps curb hunger, and promotes steady energy levels.

In addition, rice—especially brown basmati—is full of fiber and slow-digesting carbs. When combined with vegetables like carrots, celery, and bell peppers, you get a nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich meal.

What’s more, this recipe uses blended cilantro water instead of heavy sauces or salty broths. As a result, it adds freshness without excess sodium. This makes it a heart-healthy option that still packs bold flavor.

If you’re watching your macros or looking for gluten-free, dairy-free meals, this one checks every box. It’s also ideal for meal prep since it reheats beautifully and stays flavorful throughout the week.

So, whether you want a clean, nourishing dinner or just need a no-fuss weeknight solution, this dish delivers.

How to Make Instant Pot Chicken and Rice Perfectly Every Time

Choosing Between White Rice & Brown Rice and Chicken Breasts vs Thighs

When it comes to Instant Pot chicken and rice, the ingredients you choose can greatly affect the final outcome. For a light and fast meal, many prefer using white basmati rice and chicken breasts. These cook quickly and absorb flavor with ease.

On the other hand, if you’re aiming for a deeper, more comforting flavor, brown basmati rice and bone-in chicken thighs make a perfect match. Not only do they offer richer texture, but they also pair beautifully with the natural oils in dark meat.

To help you decide faster, here’s a quick comparison:

ComboCooking TimeTextureFlavor
White Rice + Chicken Breast6 mins (high pressure) + natural releaseSoft & LightMild, tender
Brown Rice + Chicken Thighs22 mins (high pressure) + natural releaseChewy & HeartyRich, savory

As you can see, both versions are great. However, your choice should depend on your time, taste preference, and available ingredients. Either way, this one-pot method makes the process simple.

Step-by-Step Method Using the Instant Pot Correctly

To achieve consistent and flavorful results, it’s important to follow each step carefully. Here’s how to make Instant Pot chicken and rice with confidence.

  1. Prep All Ingredients First
To begin, season your chicken well with salt and pepper. Then, dice your veggies—carrot, celery, and red bell pepper. Meanwhile, blend room-temperature water with fresh cilantro to create a nutrient-rich green liquid.
  2. Use the Sauté Function
Next, press the “sauté” button on your Instant Pot. Once it displays “HOT,” add oil, chopped onion, and garlic. Stir often so nothing sticks.

  1. Deglaze If Necessary
If any bits stick to the bottom, add a tablespoon or two of water. Scrape with a wooden spoon to loosen everything. This step prevents the “burn” warning later during pressure cooking.
  2. Layer Ingredients in Proper Order
Then, add your rice and season lightly again. Pour in the cilantro water and stir briefly. Next, layer diced vegetables right on top. Importantly, do not mix them in. Finally, place the seasoned chicken on top of the veggies.

  1. Close and Cook Immediately
Right after layering, close the lid without delay. This prevents water from evaporating. Set the valve to “sealing,” then press “Manual” and choose:
    • 6 minutes (high pressure) for chicken breast with white rice
    • 22 minutes (high pressure) for chicken thighs with brown rice
  2. Let Pressure Release Naturally
After the cooking time ends, allow the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally. Do not touch the valve. Instead, wait for the safety pin to drop—this can take 15 to 25 minutes.
  3. Shred and Serve Warm
Once the lid opens, enjoy the aroma. Gently pull the chicken apart with two forks right inside the Instant Pot for easy shredding. Then, stir everything together and serve with fresh chopped cilantro.

Instant Pot vs Rice Cooker: What’s the Difference?

Is the Instant Pot a Good Rice Cooker Alternative?

At first glance, both the Instant Pot and a traditional rice cooker may seem similar. However, they serve different purposes and perform in unique ways. Unlike a rice cooker that focuses solely on preparing rice, the Instant Pot serves as a multifunctional kitchen appliance. Not only can it cook rice, but it also pressure cooks, steams, sautés, and even makes yogurt.

When preparing Instant Pot chicken and rice, this multifunctionality comes in handy. You can sauté aromatics, layer ingredients, pressure cook the meal, and keep it warm—all in the same pot. That level of convenience makes it perfect for fast-paced, time-crunched cooking environments.

Additionally, the pressure cooking function enhances flavor and speeds up cooking time. Compared to a rice cooker, the Instant Pot locks in more moisture and seasoning, creating deeper flavor in less time. Plus, the option to cook meat and rice together isn’t always available in standard rice cookers.

So, while both appliances are useful, the Instant Pot is far more versatile. If you’re someone who values kitchen efficiency and space, it can easily replace multiple gadgets.

Cooking Efficiency, Functions, and Results Comparison

To help you decide which appliance suits your needs better, here’s a detailed comparison:

FeatureInstant PotRice Cooker
FunctionsPressure cook, sauté, steam, slow cook, rice, yogurtPrimarily rice cooking, sometimes steaming
TimeCooks faster under pressureTakes longer, no pressure function
FlexibilityCan cook full meals like chicken and riceLimited to rice or simple grain dishes
FlavorIntensifies flavors with pressureLighter, less developed flavors
Clean-UpOne-pot solutionUsually one pot, but no sauté function

As you can see, while rice cookers do their job well, the Instant Pot offers much more. It’s especially ideal for dishes like Instant Pot chicken and rice, where ingredients like chicken, rice, and vegetables cook together in harmony.

If you’re cooking for a family, looking to simplify your kitchen routine, or just want better-tasting meals faster, the Instant Pot is a smart upgrade.

Instant Pot Chicken and Rice Recipe: Full Ingredient Breakdown

List of Fresh, Whole-Food Ingredients

One of the best things about Instant Pot chicken and rice is how it brings together clean, wholesome ingredients in a single pot. Unlike overly processed meals, this dish delivers big flavor with basic pantry staples and fresh produce. Here’s exactly what you’ll need:

Protein Options

  • 2 chicken breasts (5 oz each) if using white basmati rice, or
  • 2 bone-in, skinless chicken thighs (10 oz each) if using brown basmati rice
These options allow you to control both flavor and cook time depending on your preference.

Vegetables and Flavor Enhancers

  • 1 small diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 cup diced carrot
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1 bunch of cilantro for blending with water and garnishing
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Rice and Liquids

  • 1 cup white or brown basmati rice (choose based on chicken type)
  • 1 cup water (must be room temperature, never cold)
  • 1/2 tablespoon ghee, bacon fat, or avocado oil

Each ingredient plays a role—not just in taste, but in the overall nutrition profile. Carrots and bell peppers deliver a boost of vitamins A and C. Meanwhile, garlic and onion offer anti-inflammatory benefits. The cilantro water adds brightness and depth without any added sodium.

Substitutions and Customization Options

This recipe is very forgiving, making it easy to tweak based on dietary needs or what’s in your kitchen. For example:

  • Oil Options: If you don’t have ghee, avocado oil or olive oil will work just fine.
  • Vegetables: No celery? Add more bell pepper or toss in frozen peas at the end.
  • Rice Swap: If basmati isn’t available, jasmine rice is a close substitute. Just adjust water and time slightly.
  • Add Depth: Try incorporating a dash of cumin, a sprinkle of smoked paprika, or a hint of crushed red pepper to elevate the flavor and introduce a subtle kick.

Want something creamier? A splash of coconut milk or a spoonful of Greek yogurt stirred in after cooking can completely transform the dish.

Each component in this dish supports a nourishing, filling meal—and best of all, it’s all made in one pot with minimal mess.

The Secret Sauce: Cilantro Water and Seasoning Techniques

How to Make the Cilantro Water Base Step by Step

One of the most unique and flavorful elements of this Instant Pot chicken and rice recipe is the cilantro water. Unlike traditional broths or stock cubes that are often high in sodium, this homemade green liquid adds a fresh, herbaceous depth—without any processed ingredients.

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Grab one bunch of fresh cilantro. Wash it well under cool running water to eliminate any dirt or residue.
  2. Place the cilantro into a blender. You don’t need to remove the stems—they’re full of flavor.
  3. Add 1 cup of room-temperature water to the blender. Cold water can interfere with the pressure build-up in the Instant Pot, so room temperature is best.
  4. Blend on high until completely smooth. The result should be a vibrant green liquid with no large bits remaining.
  5. Set it aside, and use it right after sautéing your onion and garlic.

This step takes less than 2 minutes but infuses the entire dish with freshness. Not only does it replace broth, but it also enhances the taste of rice and veggies as they cook under pressure.

In short, it’s a simple trick that delivers big flavor.

Seasoning Tips to Bring Out Maximum Flavor

Great flavor starts with simple seasoning done right. Though the ingredient list is minimal, each component pulls its weight—especially when applied with care.

Here are a few essential tips:

  • Season chicken generously with salt and pepper on both sides before cooking. This helps lock in taste during pressure cooking.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt to your rice layer before pouring in the cilantro water. It ensures every bite is seasoned from the inside out.
  • For depth and warmth, consider including a bit of ground cumin or garlic powder.
  • To enhance aroma, sauté fresh garlic and onion until translucent before layering the rest of the ingredients.
  • After cooking, finish with a touch of freshly cracked black pepper and a handful of chopped cilantro. It enhances both the freshness and visual appeal of the final dish.

These subtle but strategic touches take your Instant Pot chicken and rice from basic to unforgettable. Whether you stick to the original recipe or add your personal spin, seasoning is the key to a rich, comforting meal.

Avoiding the “Burn” Message in Your Instant Pot

Common Causes of the Burn Warning

Nothing interrupts a cooking routine quite like the Instant Pot flashing a “burn” warning halfway through your meal. It’s especially common in recipes like Instant Pot chicken and rice, where ingredients can stick to the bottom. But don’t worry—understanding why it happens can help you avoid it entirely.

Here are the most common causes:

  • Sautéing without deglazing: After cooking onions and garlic, browned bits often stick to the bottom. If not scraped up, these can trigger the burn sensor.
  • Not enough liquid: If too much liquid evaporates before sealing the pot, pressure won’t build, and the rice may scorch.
  • Thick sauces or dairy: These tend to stick or settle. Fortunately, this recipe avoids heavy sauces, which helps reduce risk.
  • Mixing ingredients: Stirring rice with vegetables or chicken before sealing often causes food to burn. Layering is key to success.

These mistakes are easy to make, but just as easy to prevent with a few adjustments.

Tips to Prevent and Troubleshoot

To keep your cooking process smooth and error-free, use the following strategies:

  1. Deglaze the pot after sautéing
Once your onions and garlic are translucent, add 1–2 tablespoons of water and scrape the bottom with a wooden spoon. This releases any stuck bits that might cause the warning.
  2. Work quickly after adding liquid
As soon as you add the cilantro water, rice, veggies, and chicken, seal the lid immediately. Waiting too long allows water to evaporate, reducing the total liquid needed for pressure.
  3. Use room-temperature water
Cold water slows down the pressurizing process and may lead to uneven heating. Instead, always use water that’s been sitting out.
  4. Layer, don’t stir
Start by layering the rice, pour in the water, arrange the vegetables on top, and finally place the chicken over everything. Do not mix. This keeps the rice from settling at the bottom and scorching.
  5. Optional Step for Beginners
If you’re not confident with speed, try this: after sautéing, turn off the Instant Pot and carefully remove the inner pot using oven mitts. Add all ingredients into the cooled inner pot, then place it back in the Instant Pot housing and seal. This method gives you more time and avoids heat buildup.

If, despite your best efforts, the burn warning still appears, simply release pressure, open the lid, stir gently, and add ¼ cup more water. Then resume cooking.

With a little care, you can avoid this common pitfall entirely—and enjoy perfect Instant Pot chicken and rice every time.

Serving and Storing Instant Pot Chicken and Rice

How to Serve: Pairing Ideas and Garnishes

Once your Instant Pot chicken and rice is cooked and shredded, it’s time to serve it up hot and fresh. While it’s a satisfying dish on its own, a few thoughtful pairings and garnishes can make it even better.

To enhance freshness, sprinkle chopped cilantro or green onions on top before serving. A squeeze of fresh lime juice adds a bright, tangy contrast that balances the richness of the rice and chicken.

If you’d like to stretch the meal or serve a crowd, here are a few easy pairing ideas:

  • Fresh side salad with lemon vinaigrette for a light contrast
  • Steamed broccoli or roasted asparagus to add greens
  • Grilled flatbread or naan to scoop up every bite
  • Sliced avocado or a dollop of Greek yogurt for creaminess
  • A side of hot sauce or chili flakes for those who love heat

Because the dish is mild by default, it’s an excellent base for bold toppings or side dishes. It also works well in meal bowls or lunchboxes when paired with fresh veggies or pickled onions.

Proper Storage and Reheating Methods

One of the great things about this dish is that it stores and reheats beautifully—making it a smart choice for meal prepping or leftovers.

Storage Tips:

  • Refrigerator: Transfer leftovers to an airtight container. Store for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, let it cool completely and freeze in single-serve portions. Use freezer-safe containers or bags. It stays fresh for up to 3 months.

Reheating Tips:

  • Microwave: Place a serving in a microwave-safe dish, add a splash of water or broth, and cover. Heat in 30-second bursts, stirring in between until hot.
  • On the stovetop, warm it in a covered pan over low heat to preserve moisture and texture. Add 1–2 tablespoons of water or broth to keep it moist.
  • Using the Instant Pot’s “Keep Warm” or “Sauté” setting, add a splash of liquid and stir gently as it reheats.

Regardless of your method, always make sure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) for food safety.

Proper storage not only prevents waste but also ensures your leftovers taste just as good the next day—or even better.

Cleaning Your Instant Pot After Cooking Chicken and Rice

Simple Cleanup Steps for Inner Pot and Lid

After enjoying a warm bowl of Instant Pot chicken and rice, the last thing you want is a complicated cleanup. Fortunately, the Instant Pot is designed to make washing up quick and painless—especially when you clean it properly after each use.

Here’s how to clean the key parts efficiently:

  1. Unplug the Instant Pot and let it cool completely before cleaning. Safety comes first.
  2. Remove the inner stainless-steel pot and wash it with warm, soapy water. A soft sponge usually works best to avoid scratching. If there are stuck-on bits, let it soak for 10 minutes before scrubbing.
  3. Clean the lid thoroughly, especially the sealing ring, steam release valve, and float valve. Food particles can get trapped here, so rinse under warm running water and use a small brush or toothpick to dislodge debris.
  4. Wipe down the heating element and outer housing with a damp cloth. Never submerge this part.
  5. Dry all parts completely before reassembling or storing.

For regular deep cleans, you can remove the sealing ring and run it through the top rack of your dishwasher. Some users keep a second ring on hand to avoid lingering smells.

This process usually takes less than 10 minutes and helps keep your Instant Pot performing at its best for years.

Removing Lingering Food Smell Naturally

Chicken, garlic, and cilantro can leave behind strong odors, especially in the silicone sealing ring. But with a few natural methods, you can easily eliminate unwanted smells:

  • Vinegar Steam Clean: Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of white vinegar to the inner pot. Run the unit on “Steam” for 2 minutes, then release the pressure naturally and let it sit for another 10 minutes before rinsing.
  • Lemon Trick: Place lemon slices and water inside the pot and run on the “Steam” setting. This not only freshens but leaves a pleasant citrus scent.
  • Baking Soda Paste: For tougher odors in the ring, apply a baking soda paste (baking soda + water), let it sit for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

By incorporating these natural deodorizing tips, your Instant Pot will stay fresh and odor-free—ready for your next batch of flavorful chicken and rice.
